What's Required

Code-Compliant Hot Tub Wiring, NEC 680

Hot tub electrical isn't a standard outlet job. It needs a dedicated circuit, a specific GFCI disconnect placement, and bonding for the surrounding deck. Skip any of these and you'll fail inspection — or worse.

  • 50-Amp Dedicated 240V CircuitSized to the tub's spec sheet. No tapping off an existing circuit.
  • GFCI Disconnect Within Sight5–50 feet from the tub per NEC 680.13, never directly above.
  • Equipotential Bond GridNEC 680.26 bonding of metal deck framing, ladder anchors, rebar, and tub shell.
  • Permit + Inspection HandledWe pull the permit, meet the inspector, and submit final paperwork.
  • Trenching Through YardsUF cable trench-and-bury for waterfront and detached-pad installs.
  • Coordinate With Tub DeliveryRoughed in before delivery so the dealer can fire it up day-one.

Lake Murray Hot Tubs Are Our Specialty

Lakefront installs come with their own challenges: longer runs from the panel, GFCI placement that respects the dock, bonding around concrete pads, and pre-coordination with dock or boathouse electrical. We wire dozens of hot tubs on Lake Murray every year — Chapin, Ballentine, Lexington side, Saluda side.

If you're planning a hot tub for a Lake Murray property, get the electrical scoped before delivery. We can come out, walk the proposed location, mark trenching, and quote on the spot.

How a Hot Tub Install Works

1

Site Walk + Quote

We measure panel-to-pad distance, plan the trench, confirm breaker space, and write a flat-rate quote.

2

Permit + Schedule

We pull the electrical permit with Lexington or Richland County and schedule around your dealer's delivery date.

3

Wire + Bond + Disconnect

Dedicated circuit, equipotential bond grid, GFCI disconnect, all per NEC 680. Typically 4–6 hours on site.

4

Inspection + Power-On

We meet the inspector, pass first time, and energize the disconnect so your dealer can set and fire the tub.

Hot Tub Wiring FAQ

What size breaker does my hot tub need?

Most residential hot tubs need a 50-amp 240V dedicated circuit on a GFCI breaker. Some larger swim spas use 60 amps. Plug-and-play 110V tubs use a 20-amp circuit. We confirm the exact requirement from your tub's spec sheet before pulling wire.

Do I need a permit for hot tub wiring in Lexington or Richland County?

Yes — both counties require an electrical permit for any 240V hot tub circuit and the GFCI disconnect. We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and handle the paperwork. Permit cost is included in our quote.

How far from the tub does the disconnect need to be?

Per NEC 680.13, the GFCI disconnect must be at least 5 feet from the tub but within sight (no more than 50 feet) and not directly above the tub. We mount it where it's visible from the tub but protected from splash.

Can you coordinate with my hot tub delivery date?

Yes. We prefer to rough in the wiring before delivery so the dealer's crew can set the tub on a fully-energized pad. Tell us your delivery date when you book and we'll work backwards. We can also wire emergency same-day if the dealer shows up and the circuit isn't ready.

Do I need bonding for a plug-and-play 110V spa?

Per NEC 680.42, even 120V cord-connected spas in permanent outdoor installations need equipotential bonding of the surrounding deck and any nearby metal. We handle the bond grid and inspection.

What does hot tub wiring cost in Columbia or Lake Murray?

A standard residential hot tub install — dedicated 50-amp circuit, GFCI disconnect, bonding, permit — typically runs $850 to $1,700 depending on panel distance and trenching. Longer runs (waterfront, detached pad) cost more. We give a flat-rate quote up front.
